  • Intellectual Property Rights for the Fashion and Jewellery Industries - 11th, May, 2015

Intellectual Property Rights for the Fashion and Jewellery Industries

    Date:     11th, May, 2015, Monday
    Time:     3.00 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th floor, IMC Building, Churchgate, Mumbai.

At the heart of fashion are fresh, new designs. Intellectual property rights provide many protective tools relevant to the fashion and jewellery industries. Registration of a design helps the owner to prevent all others from exploiting its new or original ornamental or aesthetic aspects, which may be a three-dimensional solitaire ring or a two-dimensional print on fabric.

Both these industries invest huge sums to create new and original designs but little use is made of the legal tools to protect or monetize these designs. Come learn from, Usha Athreya Chandrasekhar, an expert on how you can change this.

Usha Athreya Chandrasekhar is a lawyer by profession, and runs her own law firm, ATHREYA ASSOCIATES established in 1996. It is one of the very few all women law firms that specialize in Intellectual Properties, which covers trademarks, patents, copyrights, designs, franchising, licensing, etc. She has an extensive chamber practice with an impressive list of clients, ranging from, multinationals, pharmaceuticals, restauranters, retailers, infrastructure companies, fertilizers and chemicals, FMCG, health care companies, academics, schools, web-retailers, event management companies, jewelry and fashion designers and sports celebrities. As an executive Committee Member of the Intellectual Property Law Practitioner’s Association, she has been actively involved in the development of laws and rights pertaining to Intellectual Properties, and worked on committees reviewing various draft Bills on Patents, copyrights, trademarks and designs. She is also on the panel of consultant lawyers for IIT Mumbai.

Learn managing and enhancing business with the correct understanding and use of Intellectual Property Rights (Trademarks; Patents; Copyright Protection; Design Registration) at this event.

    Time:    3.00 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th Floor, IMC Building, Churchgate, Mumbai.

It’s all in the starts – at least the ancient gemologists would have us believe so, which is how the NAVRATAN – nine gems – came into being. The nine gems are believed to relate to five planets – Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter as well as the Sun, Moon, the ascending phase (Rahu or the dragon’s head) and the descending phase (Ketu or the dragon’s tail) of the moon.

Following the ancient science from the Vedas, gem therapy has regained importance in modern day life. This science covers what stone to wear for health, prosperity and happiness, corresponding to the ideology of the NAVRATANS.

The movie is about Narayanrao Shripad Rajhans, one of the greatest singers and stage actors. He was famous for his roles of female characters in Marathi plays, since women were not allowed to act on stage during his time. He got the name “Balgandharva” from the famous freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak who patted his back & gave him title while praising him for his performance.

    The Book Club

    Date:     7th April, 2015, Tuesday
    Time:    4.00 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th floor, IMC Building, Churchgate, Mumbai.

The Book Club of the Ladies’ Wing invites you to its fifth meeting at which we will be discussing the novella Animal Farm by George Orwell. Brilliantly written by one of Britain’s most famous authors, this short novel is a classic and often figures on lists of best English-language books ever written.

Animal Farm is said to be ‘a fairy tale for grown ups’. An easy and short read, and a seemingly simple story, it is in fact a political satire. Animals stage a revolution on a farm, and set out to create an ideal and equal society. But what really happens? Power gets concentrated in the hands of a few and the dreamed-about ideal society gradually evolves into a horrible totalitarian state.

You may collect a printout of the story from the IMC Ladies’ Wing office during working hours any day after February 15, 2015 or you can access it online at http://msxnet.org/orwell/print/animal_farm.pdf

  • Perils of Living Your Life on Social Media - 10th April, 2015

Perils of Living Your Life on Social Media

    Date:     10th April, 2015, Friday
    Time:    4.00 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th floor, IMC Building, Churchgate, Mumbai.

We are living in a time where many of us broadcast, over the Internet, a lot of personal and business information which is accessible to millions of people we don’t know. Several of us regularly post messages on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn etc. According to certain international data, seventy-three percent of adults who go online are active on social media. A lot of this activity can be attributed to the smart phones.

While these are great ways to stay connected with friends and family, they can have some devastating effects. A simple example is that if enough data has been made available – city of residence, photo, date of birth etc, it is easy for someone to impersonate you. Contact details being made available, particularly with photographs of youngsters, can attract undesirable elements to establish contact and indulge in harmful behaviour.

Social media posts are also often being used as evidence in legal matters including litigation, matrimonial and employment decisions etc. Even if there is no legal ramification one must consider loss of reputation, damage to business reputation, losing credibility, allowing someone to cyber stalk you etc.

Come learn from legal luminary, Mr. Anand Desai about some of the serious legal implications and pick up valuable tips from the technology guru on how to safely enjoy social media without exposing your entire life on it.

Mr. Desai has extensive specialist experience in several fields of law with a deep interest in the field of technology. He is listed as one of the leading lawyers in India in the Whos Who Legal (an International Bar Association publication) and in Chambers Global, PLC Which Lawyer, IFLR, and Asia-Pacific Legal 500. He has been a speaker at various forums.

    Screening of the movie 'Qissa'

    Date:     27th April, 2015, Monday
    Time:    2.30 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th floor, IMC Building, Churchgate, Mumbai.

The Art and Culture Committee brings to you yet another master piece ‘Qissa’.

Qissa is a 2013 Indian-German drama film in Punjabi, written and directed by Anup Singh. The film was screened in the Contemporary World Cinema section at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival where it won the Netpac Award for International Asian Film.

The film stars Irrfan Khan, Tillotama Shome, Tisca Chopra and Rasika Dugal.

Set in post-colonial India, Qissa tells the story of Umber Singh, a Sikh patriarch dealing with the scars of the India-Pakistan separation who raises his third girl child as a boy, unwilling to accept her as a girl. Does the girl then grow up as a girl or a boy or both?

This nature-versus-nurture conflict plays out through shocking twists and turns, intended not to shock but explore the question of identity, layer by layer. The family is faced with the truth of their identities; where individual ambition and destinies collide in a struggle with eternity.

  • Screening of the Movie – “Samsara” - 24th February 2015

Screening of the movie – “Samsara”

    Date:     24th February 2015, Tuesday
    Time:    3.30 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th Floor, IMC Building, Mumbai.

Samsara (which means "the world") is a spiritual love-story set in the majestic landscape of Ladakh, Himalayas.

The film stars Shawn Ku as the monk Tashi, and Christy Chung as Pema. The movie is directed and co written by Pan Nalin.

The film's plot is reminiscent of the story of the sage Vishvamitra and the apsara Menaka.

Samsara is a quest of one man's struggle to find spiritual enlightenment by renouncing the world and one woman's struggle to keep her enlightened love and life in the world. The question that looms large throughout the film is: What is more important - to satisfy ones thousand desires or to conquer just one? Without trying to answer the question, the film lends itself to an interesting twist in the end…A visual treat on celluloid is what Samsara promises…

    About the Director:
The Journey of the director Pan Nalin aka Nalin Kumar Pandya from a remote village in Saurashtra to being an internationally acclaimed director is commendable. This Paris based writer/director is a self taught filmmaker who spent most of his childhood on the railway platforms in India helping his father sell tea, while strongly holding on to a dream and a resolve to make movies that belong to different form of cinema.

    Time:    4.00 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th Floor, IMC Building, Mumbai.

The Book Club of the Ladies’ Wing invites you to its fourth meeting-a slide presentation and talk by Ms. Vedica Kant, author of If I die here, who will remember me?: India and The First World War. The book, richly illustrated and elegantly written, examines India’s role in the First World War (WWI) from a very original point of view. It uses first-hand accounts such as soldiers’ letters home, documents from various archives and rare photographs, to reconstruct the story of a war, which was as much India's as it was Britain's.

Vedica will give us a presentation using some of the fascinating images she has collected, together with sound recordings of Indian soldiers made during the war. This will be followed by a short discussion with the author and a question-answers session.

Vedica Kant holds an M.Phil degree in modern Middle Eastern studies from the University of Oxford. She frequently writes on South Asian and Middle Eastern history, politics and culture. She is currently based in London where she works for a leading political risk consultancy. This, her first book, has been extremely well received and reviewed.

Do join us for this unique opportunity to meet this very talented young author and to hear about and discuss the Indian experience of WWI.

    Time:    4.00 pm
Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th Floor, IMC Building, Mumbai.

The Book Club of the Ladies’ Wing invites you to its third meeting at which we will be discussing the short spy story, Giulia Lazzari, by the very well-known British writer, W. Somerset Maugham.

The story is part of a collection of loosely linked stories titled Ashenden. Although they are works of fiction, they draw upon the author's experience as a member of the British Intelligence in Europe during World War 1. (Winston Churchill reportedly advised Maugham to burn fourteen other related stories that he had written!)

The Indian Nationalist Virendranath Chattopadhyay (nickname “Chatto”), who worked subversively from distant European shores, and whom the British Intelligence attempted to assassinate, was the inspiration for Chandra Lal in Giulia Lazzari. Like most Maugham stories this one also has an ending with a twist.

Do join us to discuss this fascinating story!

The printout of the story is available at the IMC Ladies’ Wing office, you may get it collected from the office from Monday to Friday between 10 am to 7 pm, if you would prefer a soft copy, please mail us on ladieswing@imcnet.org / lw@imcnet.org.

    Date:     19th December 2014, Friday
    Time:    4.00 pm
Venue:  IMC Library Lounge, 2nd floor, IMC Building, Churchgate, Mumbai.

Surrogacy as an alternate means of having a child has gained much popularity in last few years.

This popularity has lead the Honourable Ministry of Home Affairs to issue guidelines in 2012 and a bill is likely to be placed in winter session of the parliament addressing various issues regarding surrogacy. With reasonable costs and lack of adequate governing laws, India has emerged as growing place for surrogacy. It is believed that costs in India are 1/3rd the costs in UK.

Surrogacy has specially become popular in homosexual couples and single parents across the world. However, several questions arises such as right of the child, surrogate mother and parents, right of the surrogate child to citizenship in foreign country and many many more. Mr. Amit Karkhanis, one of the foremost lawyers in India, will explain and address various issues relating to Surrogacy.

Mr. Karkhanis heads the firm Kay Legal and Associates LLP having over 12 years of Corporate Legal experience in the major practice areas of the firm. He holds a three year law degree (L.L.B) and a Masters of Law (L.L.M) in International Trade Laws from University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom.

He also has an extensive experience in the areas of Medico legal Laws, Surrogacy and Civil Laws, with an in-depth understanding of the legal and regulatory jurisprudence and practice in this niche area.

Venue:  Walchand Hirachand Hall, 4th Floor, IMC Building, Churchgate

Most people believe that paying their taxes diligently and timely will help them to get a good night's sleep and so they discharge their tax liability year after year by paying income tax on time. However, many taxpayers remain ignorant about paying another form of tax which is charged on the assets gathered by them – i.e. Wealth Tax, the less famous sibling of income tax.

Mr. K. V. Chowdary, Chairman of Central Board of direct taxes (CBDT) the top policy making body of the Income Tax department will speak to the members on issues pertaining to tax. The talk will highlight concerns regarding taxation incentives for women entrepreneurs, wealth tax on jewellery inheritance, taxation issues regarding gifts of properties to children living abroad, and several other issues relating to income and wealth tax issues for women.

Mr. K. V. Chowdary has earlier served as the Director General of I-T (Investigations) in the national capital where he headed a number of high-profile tax probes, including the 2G spectrum allocation case and the HSBC Geneva taxpayers list along with a number of cases dealing with blackmoney and tax evasion.

    Date:    14th October 2014, Tuesday
    Time:    4.00 pm
Venue:  IMC Library Lounge, 2nd floor, IMC Building, Churchgate

“The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you will go.”

The book club of the ladies’ wing brings to you another masterpiece novella Broken Nest by Rabindranath Tagore.

This selection of Rabindranath Tagore's stories exemplifies his remarkable ability to enter the complexities of human relationships. Within seemingly simple plots, Tagore portrays with extraordinary compassion and lyricism the predicament of women in traditional Bengali contexts.

This sensitively-written 72-page novella, Broken Nest (Nastanir), is said to be semi-autobiographical and was made into the movie Charulata by Satyajit Ray featuring Soumitra Chatterjee, Madhabi Mukherjee and Sailen Mukherjee.

The first masterpiece to be discussed is the novel 'Ice-Candy Man' by the Pakistani - American author Bapsi Sidhwa. This is the first novel by a female novelist from Pakistan which deals with the partition of India and its aftermaths and describes the fate of people in Lahore. The novel deals with "the partition of India through the eyes of a girl Lenny growing up in a Parsee family, surviving through female bonding and rebellion.

An absorbing and well-reviewed book, it has been described as both hilarious and heartbreaking. The novel was adapted by Deepa Mehta for the movie Earth which starred Amir Khan, Nandita Das, Rahul Khanna amongst others.
